When it comes to cancer treatment and cancer charities, there are different categories of these. What is so important for those dealing with cancer is that there is a lot of support in Canada. Much of which comes from these different charities.
Canadians are very fortunate in that they enjoy free health care. This means most of the treatments they need will be covered by the government. However, many of those with cancer end up incurring in additional costs. Some will find this to be a financial burden. Different government programs can assist with this.
Treatments like chemotherapy and some others can cause side effects that interfere with an individual’s appearance.
It is not uncommon for many cancer patients to lose their hair as a result of their cancer treatment. Although the hair will grow back afterwards, it can be challenging for the individual. Not only are they dealing with the effects of cancer, along with the treatments, but they are also now dealing with a perceived decline in their appearance.
There is a charity known as Pantene that entices healthy individuals to donate their hair to make real hair wigs. The benefit of this is that real hair is more natural and more comfortable than synthetic wigs.
Another charitable organization is the Look Good Feel Better Program. This is a program that supports women who are dealing with changes in their appearance. They hold workshops to help these individuals use techniques
that can help them overcome the negative aspects of cancer treatment when it comes to appearance.
Several other foundations provide general support. These are located throughout the different provinces. Some examples are:
* The Friends of Gilda’s Society – Nova Scotia
* Healing and Cancer Foundation – Nova Scotia
* Gilda’s Club Simcoe Muskoka Barrie – Ontario
* Canadian Cancer Survivor Network Ottawa – Ontario
Those in the midst of cancer treatments may feel too overwhelmed to start researching all the different charities and support to meet their needs. This is where friends and family can give a hand. Cancer health teams can probably be of assistance by giving some suggestions as well.
